AI, Power, and the Human Cost of Moving Fast: A Conversation with Christa Hill
I recently had the pleasure of joining Christa Hill on her podcast Product for Humans for a thoughtful conversation about artificial intelligence, power, and the human consequences of moving too quickly with new technology.
Christa is one of the most thoughtful voices exploring the relationship between technology, product design, and human wellbeing, and she created a space for a deep and honest discussion about where the digital world is headed.
The central theme of our conversation was simple but urgent: technology is accelerating faster than our systems of responsibility.
As I shared during the episode:
“Technology itself isn’t good or bad. The real question is how humans choose to use it.”
Moving Fast Has a Human Cost
One of the challenges we discussed is the culture of “move fast and break things” that has shaped much of the tech industry.
For years, the tech sector has rewarded speed above all else. Build quickly. Scale quickly. Disrupt everything.
But what happens when the systems we are “breaking” are democracy, trust, or mental health?
AI systems now influence hiring decisions, information ecosystems, education, and public discourse. That means the stakes are much higher than they were during the early days of social media.
During the conversation I noted:
“We’re building the infrastructure of the future Internet right now. The decisions we make today will shape the digital world for decades.”
Power in the Age of AI
Another topic Christa and I explored was the concentration of power in modern technology.
A relatively small number of companies now control platforms that influence billions of people. With AI layered on top of those systems, the decisions made inside tech companies can ripple across society.
That’s why conversations about ethics, governance, and accountability can’t remain abstract academic debates.
They need to become part of how organizations build products and lead teams.
Businesses have a unique role to play here. Governments often move slowly, and individual users have limited influence. But companies are actively designing the tools that shape digital life.
That means leaders have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to ask better questions about the technologies they build.
Designing Technology for Humans
Christa’s podcast title—Product for Humans—captures something important.
Technology should not simply be optimized for growth, engagement, or profit.
It should be designed to serve human wellbeing.
That requires more intentional leadership in technology companies, stronger ethical frameworks in product development, and broader voices at the table when new tools are being built.
When we design technology with people in mind, we move closer to a digital ecosystem that supports trust, dignity, and human potential.
Thank You, Christa
A huge thank you to Christa Hill for hosting such a thoughtful and important conversation.
Her podcast creates space for discussions that go beyond hype and into the deeper questions about how technology is shaping society—and what we can do to guide it responsibly.
If you care about AI, ethics, leadership, and the future of technology, I encourage you to listen to the full episode.
